What is Stainless Steel

This question may sound like something you are too embarrassed to ask, but let’s ask, together, and know the answer to it once and for all. Very simply, stainless steel is an alloy—meaning a metal made by combining two or more metallic elements—of carbon and iron. This type of metal is very resistant to rust, staining, and corrosion. In addition, it’s also very easy to maintain which when taken everything into consideration makes it ideal for a variety of applications for a variety of industries.

Especially when there is prolonged exposure to water, air, heat, and moisture, the usage of stainless steel is particularly suitable. Also due to its polished reflective appearance, it has become a popular design element, used in sculptures and modern furniture, for example. To create a certain desired effect on top of what’s already inherent in the steel, most metallurgical engineers will also manipulate the properties by adding nickel, titanium, aluminum, or other elements.

Stainless Steel Cookware

It goes without saying due to the desired characteristics of stainless steel, it is very suitable for cookware use. Not only is it very strong, rust- and corrosion- resistant but easy to care for, which thereby makes it easy for you. After cooking with it, if you prefer, you can also dump everything into the dishwasher, as the durability of the steel makes it able to withstand the water pressure and washing cycles of the machine.

Accordingly, it is also in this durability that makes the stainless steel cookware able to tolerate high levels of heat. Unlike nonstick cookware which you are required to use it safely, under 500 degrees Fahrenheit, you can otherwise cook over high heat with this cookware, without damaging the pieces. Cooking over high heat in particular is great for getting a good sear on meats; therefore, if you do this often along with stir-frying and pan-frying, then this material type will be perfect for you.

While nonstick cookware can indeed be healthier, as you have the option to use less or no oil when cooking with it, it is not great in creating better fond ( browned bits of vegetables or meats stuck to the bottom of pots and pans) though. For this, it is said that stainless steel is a better material for the task, as well as giving your food a richer color for more flavor. Most stainless steel cookware sets will also often be magnetic, making them induction compatible, and they will also be oven- and broiler-safe (depending on the handle material.)

Pros of Stainless Steel Cookwar e

  • Very long lasting—it resists dings, dents, scratches, rust, and corrosion very well.
  • Very versatile—can be used over high heat; can be used directly from the stovetop to the oven; can be used in the refrigerator.
  • Dishwasher safe.
  • Often magnetic, and can be used with induction cooktops.
  • Nonreactive—won’t react to acidic foods.

Cons of Stainless Steel Cookware

  • Pure stainless steel cookware does not conduct heat well and evenly, which is why it’s often fused with higher thermal conductivity metals.
  • Usually more pricey than other materials.
  • Tend to discolor under high heat.

How to Clean Stainless Steel Cookware

If used improperly, stainless steel cookware is said to present some tough cleaning challenges.  Brown spots or discoloration may occur which can be very difficult to remove, especially with regular cleaning alone. This will not affect the performance of the cookware, but presumably you, like us, would like to keep your cookware looking bright and shiny most of the time. To do this, simply follow the instructions below to learn how to clean various types of stains. Also, say hello to Bar Keepers Friend, a non-bleach, non-abrasive cleaner, that you would love to call on for every tough stain removal. You can get it here .

1: How to clean food residue or buildup from the cookware. If bits of food has stuck and crusted onto your cookware, soak it in warm, soapy water for several hours. After that, drain the water and then use a scouring pad to scrub off the built-up food. If possible, do no use steel wool pads, although effective, as they are very harsh on the surface of the cookware.

2. How to clean brown spots or discolored areas from the cookware. Brown spots or discolored areas are largely caused by constant high heat. In this respect, the higher the chrome content in the stainless steel, the less prone it is to happen, according to the Cookware Manufacturers Association. So whenever possible, try and get the 18/10 stainless steel, which numbers refer to the composition of the steel with 18% chromium and 10% nickel. The other numbers you will commonly see are 18/8 and 18/0, but once again, try getting the 18/10 steel.

But anyway if brown spots occur, simply sprinkle some Bar Keepers Friends along with a little water, and then use a good scrubbing pad to remove them. Optionally, you may also use a combination of baking soda and warm water, and then a dry cloth or sponge to scrub them off.

3. How to clean any water spots from the cookware. Water spots can occur if there is high mineral content in your water, also known as hard water, or if your cookware has been exposed to added compounds like fluoride. If they occur, simply douse the pots and pans with some club soda (yes you heard it right), rinse them off, and then use a clean cloth to wipe them dry. If possible, try hand drying your pieces, as this will most likely prevent the water spots from occurring in the first place.

How to Choose Stainless Steel Cookware

More often than not, when you select a stainless steel cookware, you will be spending quite a bit of money on it. Therefore, it should satisfy you in more ways than one. This means it should last for a very long time, be very versatile, and perform well—not to mention also be very easy and comfortable to use.

Immediately, the first thing that comes to mind with which fulfills these criteria is the fully clad tri-ply stainless steel. Fully clad means the cookware has an aluminum core that extend all the way up the cookware’s sides, ensuring even heat distribution, whereas tri-ply means three layers have been bonded together to form the cookware. Usually, for a tri-ply cookware, the three layers fused together will be stainless steel-aluminum-stainless steel, indicating two layers of stainless steel sandwiched between an aluminum core. As a result, you will benefit from the advantages conferred by both materials instead of only one while at the same time avoiding the disadvantages presented by one material.

If combining three layers is better than one, why not combine more, you may ask. Yes, in the world of ply cookware, you also have the option to choose 5-ply and 7-ply, even. These options do in fact have more materials bonded together; however, the pros have tested them and said tri-ply actually heated more evenly. In other words, what they are really saying is that there is no point getting beyond the tri-ply. Moreover, as more layers fuse into the cookware, they will also be more expensive.

Of course while we are very much endorsing the fully clad tri-ply cookware, its price may not be for everyone. For something a little more down to earth, and can also tackle any cooking job without any hiccups, you can get the stainless steel cookware with tri-ply disks, also known as encapsulated bottoms. This type of cookware is a notch below fully clad, but it can distribute heat more evenly as compared to pure stainless steel alone.

So, at the very least try to get this cookware instead of one that is made from a single piece of stainless steel.

Best Calphalon Cookware Sets 2017

June 20, 2017 By Tina

If fiery hot cooking is what you often do, make sure you take a look at Calphalon cookware. I’ve used so many brands before and I feel Calphalon has the best features to handle the heat. High heat stove top cooking and oven broiling wasn’t an issue for my Calphalon cookware. Never once did I noticed any warping or degradation. Calphalon cookware is also eye candy; not only does it cook food evenly, it looks amazing doing it.

Every cookware brand has their own signature formula to manufacture amazing cookware; Calphalon is no different. Everything that ranges from their non-stick cookware to their clad stainless steel cookware has precisely crafted elements to stand out from the crowd. Even the exterior of all Calphalon cookware aren’t neglected. Calphalon cookware has a clean exterior and a smooth finish that ensures durability and visual beauty.

Calphalon Stainless Cookware Set

simply calphalon

If you’re looking for a stainless steel 10-piece cookware set, the Simply Calphalon cookware set may be a set you’d want to check out. Since I love sauteing and blackening which needs a little degree of high heat, I loved these 18/10 brushed stainless steel cookware as they’re able to handle the heat very well.

Calphalon threw stockpots, saucepans and even lids into the mix. For the casual home chef like me all of these cookware would be more than enough to prepare excellent home cooked meals. These cookware and the aluminium core helped with even heating and cooking. So to sum it up, this will be a worthy investment because not only will it be long lasting, it looks pretty good too.

These pots and pans clean up real easy too. You have the option of using soap and water or tossing them into the dishwasher (gently, please). Either way compared to other cookware I’ve used, cooking and clean up is just a breeze with this Calphalon cookware set.

Calphalon Copper Cookware Set

calphalon tri ply copper set

The Calphalon Tri-Ply copper cookware set bring out the excellent heat conductivity copper has.

This 10-piece cookware set has a combined form of three different types of materials to ensure your cooking is safe and the food is evenly cooked. Copper is known to be highly reactive to ingredients that have a high acidic rating or a high alkalic rating. So to utilize the efficient conductivity of copper and to combat the reactivity issue, Calphalon bonded the copper layer below a layer of aluminium and an interior stainless steel finish. The aluminum layer helps even heating and the non-reactive stainless steel finish allows you to cook almost anything on these cookware.

This Calphalon set also has flared rims to ensure easy pouring and no spillage. Aside from all the user friendly features, the Calphalon Tri-ply copper cookware set is oven and broiler safe up to a whooping 450 degrees. I love the stay cool V shaped handles that is a safety feature everyone needs.

Calphalon Hard Anodized Cookware Set

calphalon commercial

For a really hardy set of cookware, you should look at the Calphalon Commercial hard anodized cookware set with a lifetime warranty. If that isn’t a testament to the quality of the cookware set I don’t know what is. Cooking with hard anodized cookware is great. Heat distributes evenly so your food gets cooked perfectly.

The price of the set isn’t very high for such a quality set of cookware. The best part of the set was, thanks to the ergonomic stay cool handles these pieces of cookware, I didn’t even need mitts to handle these pots and pans.

I totally get it if Calphalon isn’t your thing so I have taken the liberty of including recommendations of other cookware from some of the other brands I’ve used. Check out cookware from All Clad or the ever so famous, Rachael Ray . Anolon Cookware Reviews of 2017

May 23, 2017 By elliot

Although the nonstick cookware was invented by Tefal, it was Anolon whom helped popularize it. Credited for launching the hard-anodized nonstick cookware with smooth interior in 1989, it provided the cookware the durability and longevity people were looking for. All of this was made possible due to anodizing, which, in case you didn’t know, is an electrochemical process that physically alters the metal surface especially aluminum. The result is that the aluminum not only becomes stronger than conventional stainless steel but also non-reactive with acidic foods, such as tomato sauce, making it ideal for cookware.

The name Anolon then gets its name from this process, of which it’s also referred to for its cookware collection which spans several product lines. Each product line is made distinct by its material, and depending on the line, Anolon may incorporate either a layer of copper, bronze, or stainless steel into its composition.

If you are looking to get a cookware set with great heat transfer and a proven nonstick surface, then Anolon may just be what you’re looking for.

Here are my Anolon cookware reviews of 2017.

Anolon Nouvelle Copper Hard Anodized Nonstick 11-Piece Cookware Set

Anolon Nouvelle Copper Hard Anodized Nonstick 11-Piece Cookware Set

Anolon Cookware Reviews - Anolon Nouvelle Copper Hard Anodized Nonstick 11-Piece Cookware Set

What’s included?

  • 1.5-Quart & 3-Quart Covered Saucepans
  • 8-Quart Covered Stockpot
  • 3-Quart Covered Saute with helper handle
  • 8.5″ Skillet
  • 12″ Covered Skillet

The Anolon Nouvelle Copper line features anodized aluminum construction with a layer of copper inside the base, sandwiched between layers of stainless steel. The copper and aluminum provides excellent heat response, and the stainless steel bottom which extends to the sides provides added durability. As the inside of the pans is made of anodized aluminum, it’s metal-utensil safe and won’t scratch or chip easily. Additionally, it also features unique rivets that are flat and nonstick, thereby preventing food buildup.

Whether you are using the Nouvelle Copper line for your electric coil cooktop or induction cooktop, it’s suitable for all types, as its base is, once again, made of stainless steel. Also stainless steel are the lids as well as the handles which are comfortable to hold and oven safe up to 500- F. Only thing, I find, is that the handle is pretty heavy, but it won’t be that noticeable especially when you’re moving food around.

For a reliable, durable cookware that reacts quickly with heat, I think the Anolon Copper line would make a great addition to your kitchenware.

Anolon Advanced Bronze Hard Anodized Nonstick 11-Piece Cookware Set

Anolon Cookware Reviews - Anolon Advanced Bronze Hard Anodized Nonstick 11-Piece Cookware Set

What’s included?

  • 1.5-Quart & 3-Quart Covered Saucepans
  • 8-Quart Covered Stockpot
  • 3-Quart Covered Saute Pan
  • 8″ and 10″ Open Skillets
  • 12″ Shallow Grill Pan

If you’re looking for a little more pizazz in your cookware, the Advanced Bronze line may be more of your thing. With a modern design and rich bronze finish, it can easily spruce up your kitchen decor in a heartbeat. But don’t think it’s all looks though, as the line is also built to deliver enduring performance with its anodized aluminum construction and DuPont Autograph 2 interior, which is a durable, nonstick coating. Heat can be distributed quickly and evenly while also reducing hot spots that can cause food to burn with this construction.

To let you gain more flexibility in your cooking choices, the line is also oven safe up to 400- F. Also oven safe are the handles which are made of a combination of stainless steel and silicone. Additionally, they are also dual riveted to provide added strength. In terms of the lids, they are made of break-resistant glass, which are also easy to see through. The only thing I wish this line would offer is that it’s dishwasher safe, but it’s only metal utensil safe. As such, you will have to hand wash it after every use. The upside is that by doing so, you will retain its shine and luster for years to come.

Anolon Tri-Ply Clad Stainless Steel 12-Piece Cookware Set

anolon cookware reviews - Anolon Tri-Ply Clad Stainless Steel 12-Piece Cookware Set

What’s included?

  • 1-1/2- and 2-Quart Saucepans
  • 3-1/2-Quart Saucepot
  • 4-Quart Saute
  • 8-Quart Stockpot
  • 8-1/2- and 10-1/4″ Skillets

Integrating a mixture of stainless steel and aluminum in its construction is the Anolon Tri-Ply Clad. Induction compatible and stain resistant, this line is as versatile as it is durable. With excellent heat transfer due to its aluminum core, you can easily get a good sear with it. Cooking the perfect steak, then, can be easier to achieve with it, for example. All utensils are oven safe up to 500F including the lids, and they are generously sized.

It is worth noting that the Anolon Tri-Ply Clad uses 18/10 stainless steel. This steel, like most notable steel used in cookware, is composed of 18% chromium and 8% nickel. Chromium protects the steel from rust while nickel enhances the corrosion resistance of the steel. Moreover, this also makes the cookware dishwasher safe, unlike the previous two I’ve covered. Only thing about this line is due to its straight-edge pan, pouring from it will result in dripping. Instead, I would have much preferred it if it was flared edge.

Nevertheless, this line is beautiful, well crafted, and more important, built to last you a lifetime.

Lodge Pre Seasoned Cast Iron Skillet

March 17, 2017 By Tina

Lodge Cast-Iron Skillet Are you a minimalist? Check. Are you an environmentalist? Check. Loved grandma’s cooking of pan seared beef with lard? Check check check. Then Lodge’s pre seasoned cast iron skillet will be just the right Christmas gift for you. And even if you don’t have a common ground with the questions posed, you’ll still be impressed with the cast iron cookware that will last you generations.

The Natural Non Stick

At first glance, the 10 ¼ “skillet (measuring around 8 ½” internally) wouldn’t strike you as anything special. In fact it resembles grandma’s old cookware from her little run down kitchen in the country house. Upon closer inspection, you’ll notice that the internal surface of the black charcoal looking skillet is a little bumpy; much like acne bumps on an adolescent’s face. Oh…those years of raging hormones.

But don’t worry, the unevenness of the surface is actually a good thing. (Teenage me rolling her eyes in disbelief). This is actually due to the pre seasoning of the skillet and it is these very bumps that will allow you to roast your chicken to perfection without having them stick to the pan. In fact they act as a natural non stick coating that doesn’t come off like mistreated non stick cookware .

This skillet can be used to cook practically anything from baking scrumptious brownies, frying vegetables ala Chinese style to grilling honeyed pork chops and can sit practically on top of anything that emits heat from the conventional cooking stove, the flaming grill, your large oven to the campfire in the wild outdoors (or the back of your house). It’s an all in one cookware and that’s a plus if you don’t like your kitchen being cluttered with too many pieces of cookware.

You’ll notice that there are 2 little spouts on each side of the skillet, making it user friendly for both left and right handed people. Oh, and they also have both a long handle as well as a little gripper, both on opposite sides of each other making it easy to hold the skillet. (It’ll be a lot harder to balance using just the long handle alone). Both the long handle and the short gripper have holes to allow you to hang the skillet on your kitchen’s wall of fame. Talk about ergonomics!

Not for the Work-Shy

Bear in mind that this cookware might not be suitable for lazy cooks. You’ll need to coat your skillet with a little oil prior to using it (not an issue) and also after it has been washed with hot water (not boiling water though), without soap (umm…yay?) and patted dry with a towel. Follow this with a heating of the skillet after the oil has been added. This is to achieve the non stick characteristics of the skillet. The task can be a little trying for people who want things done quickly.

You’ll need a lot of patience and determination to keep up with this routine of pre and post coating of the skillet. This cookware is also not for amateur cooks. Sure it heats up really fast and evenly, but if you’re not too careful, you might end up serving charred potatoes to your in laws. That would not be a pretty sight.

Also, it can be quite heavy but hey, you’ll get to exercise those sagging arm muscles of yours.

Best for the Pros

This cookware is ideal for seasoned cooks and would definitely last them a lifetime under good maintenance. Amatuer cooks? Good luck learning the ropes. The additional advantage is the amazingly affordable price. Fifteen bucks for a piece of cookware that will last decades? I’m in. Get this skillet here .
